These instructions contain an overview of the steps needed to get iTools for Mac OS X configured and running.
Important: Be sure that you are logged in as a user in the admin group, and NOT as root!
If you are using the standard Mac OS X installation, Internet Explorer is installed and can be used to download the iTools. This is recommended.
Warnings and OS X anomalies:
From the desktop (or the Sherlock Window), drag the iTools-6.00x.pkg.tar.gz archive to your top level folder, so that it resides at the level of the Applications, Library and Users folders.
Open the Terminal, found in /Applications/Utilities, and at the # prompt, enter:
cd / | This changes your location to the root directory (or top level folder in Mac OS). |
ls -l | This lists the files and folders in the current directory. Make sure your iTools archive is there. |
tar zxvf iTools-6.005.pkg.tar.gz | This unzips the archive. The version number on the archive may change, 6.00"x". Make sure that you enter the exact file name of the version you are attempting to unzip. |
Unzipping the archive, results in the creation of an iTools folder. Should you plan to install other packages, you may want to organize everything in a single folder, but it's not required.
Quit Terminal and go to the Mac OS Finder. The unzipped iTools folder contains a Release_Notes folder, and the following files; installer.sh and iTools.pkg.
".pkg" files are used by the Mac OS X application called the package Installer (which resides at Applications --> Utilities --> Installer, (this is an extra tip, you won't really need to know where it lives for the iTools install).
iTools is a family of Mac OS X networking applications that require a properly setup network configuration. Before installing iTools, each Mac OS X system must be configured with a hostname, IP address, domain name, and an IP address for a Domain Name Server.
In Mac OS X , network information is configured in: Applications --> System Preferences -->Network.
In the TCP/IP tab, chose Configure "Manually". if not already set up, enter an IP Address for this machine, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Address, and Search Domains. The machine's hostname will be set during the iTools installation.
By default, the Apple installed Apache is set to have a root Documents Folder of /Library/WebServer/Documents. iTools uses a root folder for web sites of /Library/WebServer/WebSites. The iTools installation creates an alias to the Apache document root folder. So,for testing purposes, you don't need to change the Documents Folder setting. However, if you have your own web pages and you wish to test using them, they can be placed in the /Library/WebServer/WebSites folder and you will need to change the setting for the designated Documents Folder.
Backup Existing Apache Configuration File
If you have made changes to
/etc/httpd/httpd.conf, save a copy of the this
file before you do the iTools install.
The installation process takes about 5 minutes. After installation, iTools will be configured and running.
Open the iTools folder and double-click the iTools.pkg file. This will launch the Apple Installer, which will place the various files and folders where they are needed. Restart your server. That's it.
The iTools installer will have configured the requisite apache.conf file - when you restart your server, Apache (and other servers in the iTools configuration) will be running as an invisible background application(s).
You will need to know the location of a few essential files:
/Library/WebServer/WebSites | usual folder iTools uses for your html files |
/Applications/iTools | this is a front end to the background Apache server; it is used for some configuration, although most configuration is done via a browser |
The iTools folder that was unzipped also contains Release_Notes; you'll probably want to have that material handy.
When you start up your Mac, the servers are automatically launched., and run as invisible background apps. In addition to the servers themselves, the iTools package includes a "front-end" application. This front-end application, called iTools, can be found in the Applications folder, double-click to launch.
Launching or quitting the iTools application does not affect the server status. The Admin menu items allow local administration of the following:
Most other administrative tasks, such as, adding users or virtual hosts, and log format, are done using the browser-based administration.
For new installations, a web server administration account is automatically created when iTools is installed with username admin and password admin. Overlay installations (those that install over a previous iTools) preserve existing web server accounts.
For security reasons, you are strongly advised to change the default Admin username and password before proceeding further.
Pull down the "Admin" menu and select
the "Set Admin Password" item. Enter the admin
username and a new password for the iTools administration server.
This username and password is used only by iTools. It is not part of
the OS X multiple users database. You must be logged in as root in
the MAC OS to change the Admin password; logging in as a user in
the Admin group is not sufficient. Setting the admin password is
shown in the screen shot below:
Add-ons to Enhance iTools
Several pre-built, pre-configured software packages
are available for iTools to add functionality. If you have downloaded
additional packages, you may wish to install them them now. Follow
install instructions for each package.
Use a browser to connect to the local system. The default URL "http://hostname.domainname" should give you the content previously available from the Apple supplied web server, unless you have chosen to use your own html pages and have set the Documents Folder in the Services tab of the Network configuration to /Library/WebServer/WebSites.
You can turn on the iTools Admin server either from the Admin menu of the iTools application or by entering the URL: http://hostname.domainname/itools_admin .
If the Admin server has not already been launched using the iTools app, you will be prompted twice for your admin password, once to launch the admin server, and once to connect to the main Admin web administration page.
